Important Question in a Borderline Theocracy

"Remember Man that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return."
Today being Ash Wednesday, do you suppose Rick Santorum and/or Newt Gingrich (each an alleged Catholic) will show up at the Republican debate tonight with ashes on their foreheads? That would be the strict liturgical requirement, no?

What does it mean if one or both shows up clean of forehead?

Fair is Fair When It Comes the "Upperdown" Vote

Funny how when the Republicans are in charge they're always clamoring righteously about the simple necessity of an "up-or-down vote," but put a brilliant, 39-year-old self-professed liberal from the Socialist Republic of Bezerkely up for a judicial seat and the wheels grind to a halt.

Although a vote on a judicial approval calls for a simple majority (51 votes), Senate rules require a 60-vote tally on the "motion to proceed to a vote." That's the recipe for gridlock, right there.

Schwarzenegger Love Child

Annnd...another one bites the dust.
Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, separated after she learned he had fathered a child more than a decade ago — before his first run for office — with a longtime member of their household staff.

Shriver moved out of the family's Brentwood mansion earlier this year, after Schwarzenegger acknowledged the paternity. The staff member worked for the family for 20 years, retiring in January.

Double Standard Dept: Cheesecake vs. Beefcake

Let's take a minute and consider the shrieking outcry we'd be hearing from the sanctimonious hanky-wringers in the family values movement had this magazine cover featured a politician of the female persuasion.

Adding a note of juicy, hypocritical irony to the right-wing's winking and licentious acceptance of its beefcake congressman, young Aaron Schock (R) -- ripped, well-groomed and tidy -- is not only a fundamentalist Christian, he's widely rumored to be one of teh gays. Natch.

Ensign Resigning

We're finally rid of this unctuous fellow. I guess his laundry was a bit dirtier than he was willing to have us believe, so he'll be washing it at home.

On Infidelity: Gingrich Runs a Dubious Excuse "Up the Flagpole" (Wink, Wink...Nudge, Nudge)

Caught with your pants down? In flagrante delicto? Ask yourself if this is the sort of explanation that might fly with your wife or significant other...
"There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate." -- former House Speaker and likely presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on his notable (and notorious!) tendency to stray from his marital vows.
If this were true, then Bill Clinton is the most patriotic man in the history of the United States.

From the comments, "thepoliticalcat" gives the full run-down on the patriotic Mr. Gingirch's sordid "romantic" history:
"...he pursued [wife #1] avidly (he was 16 at the time and she was in her early 20s, 23, IIRC), but later lied about his age (though not hers). He claimed he was 18. So he marries his high-school teacher, has kids with her, dumps her when she gets cancer (the very day after she had uterine surgery) to marry #2, whom he's been schtupping all along, and then when #2 gets diagnosed with MS, he dumps HER (on Mother's Day, no less) over the phone while she's at her Mom's, telling her he's planning to marry the intern he's been schtupping all along. Charming fellow."
The only thing missing from this succinct synopsis is a reminder that all the while Newt's salamander was making the rounds, he was leading the charge to impeach Bill Clinton for schtupping Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. Mark it down folks, there's no way this cowardly, craven little man is ever, ever going to be President of the United States.

OMFG.

When a sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, fire and brimstone preacher who rails against teh gays get caught with his "hand in the cookie jar," so to speak (what he did was get caught jerking off at a kids' playground), and the best he can do by way of apology is say he "understands hypocrisy," well, that's when you know denial is not just a river in Egypt anymore.

Too Straight for the GOP

There's speculation in some circles that Chris Lee had to resign from Congress because his fumbled attempt at a tryst involved an adult heterosexual woman [who was not a prostitute]. Had it been a live boy or a dead hooker, or a gay man or a farm animal, he might have hung on at least through the end of his term.

Rep. Christopher Lee: That Was Fast

At least he had the good sense to resign, but here's a word to the wise:
"If you're a 46-year-old, married, 'family values' conservative Christian Republican congressman, do not send shirtless photos of your "39-year-old divorced lobbyist" self to women you meet on Craigslist."

How many people who subscribe to all that sanctimonious "War on Christmas" baloney do you suppose actually go to church on December 25th?

Staggering Hypocrisy

Newly-elected anti-health care reform teabagger congressman is pissed -- pissed, I tell you -- that his gold-plated federal health insurance plan doesn't kick in until 30 days after he's sworn in.

Things That Should Make You Say "Hmmm...?"

Carly Fiorina, hypocrite?
Carly Fiorina, who is staking her U.S. Senate campaign on her corporate record, contends that California's tax structure is hostile to business — one reason, she has said, that she was forced to outsource thousands of jobs when she ran Hewlett-Packard Co.

But while Fiorina was chief executive of the computer giant, the state was hospitable enough to grant the company a controversial $13-million tax refund even though, state officials said, it had already used credits to offset some income tax bills.

Not Ground Zero, Not a Mosque

Worth remembering that the geographical separation of a couple of city blocks in Manhattan could very easily amount to 100,000 people or more. That's a greater population than most of the small towns where the small-minded people opposed to the mosque Cordoba House live (in fact it's 18 times greater than that of Wasilla, Alaska), and that's the reason small-minded small-town America ought to stay out of the Big Apple's business.

Disgraced Congressman: "I tried everything..."

Why I'm a Proud Fallen Catholic

Because of stories like this one about a nun in Phoenix, AZ...
“She is a kind, soft-spoken, humble, caring, spiritual woman whose spot in Heaven was reserved years ago...” “Everyone I know considers Sister Margaret to be the moral conscience of the hospital...” “She works tirelessly and selflessly as the living example and champion of compassionate, appropriate care for the sick and dying.”
So what did the Church do with this saintly woman?

It excommunicated her.

Portrait of a Self-Hating Gay Man

California State Senator Roy Ashburn "came out" yesterday on a Bakersfield radio station, then defiantly (not to mention hypocritically) said that he will return to his seat in Sacramento and continue to vote against the civil rights of gay people in the state. Assburn Ashburn sees no cognitive dissonance in this, contending that his role as an elected official requires him to legislate in a way that "reflects the wishes of my district." It matters not a whit to him that many "in his district" now consider him a biblical abomination and would sooner see him put to death than educate their children or share a bathroom. And that fair enough, I suppose.

What's getting lost in the discussion of Ashburn's hypocrisy is the very real matter of his DUI. The man was arrested for driving drunk, in a state-owned vehicle, at 3 in the morning on a Tuesday night. If he wants to continue to be a self-hating gay man that his prerogative, it's the DUI on our dime that we should all be pissed about.

Sacramento Schadenfreude

Lookin' more and more like CA State Senator Roy Ashburn (R-Hypocrisy) is gay as a $3 bill...

The openly gay mayor of West Sacramento says that he's spotted state Sen. Roy Ashburn (R), who has racked up a consistently anti-gay voting record over the years, at gay clubs a number of times.
[...]
CBS13's Koula Gianulias also reports that [West Sac Mayor Christopher] Cabaldon called out Ashburn in a Facebook posting about six months ago.

"It wouldn't bother me so bad to see Roy Ashburn at Badlands with a boy if he didn't have such a bad voting record on gay rights," he wrote.
If memory serves me right, this guy Ashburn was best man at my boss's wedding or some such thing. They're certainly good friends. [Making clear: I have absolutely no suspicions about my boss. He may be a conservative Republican, but I'll grant him the courage of his convictions. He's no hypocrit.] I'm dying to ask him about this whole episode, but I dare not for fear I'll show my glee...

Closer to Home

I believe this is the first hypocritical family values Republican fear-monger to take a fall of whom I can actually say I've met him in person and {yeeeeeech!} shaken his hand...
In better days Ashburn, a fierce opponent of gay rights, was fighting marriage equality and organizing anti-gay marriage rallies as part of his "Traditional Family Values" campaign.

But he hit a bump in the road -- figuratively, not literally -- Wednesday at around 2 AM when CHP officers observed him weaving and driving erratically in downtown Sacramento. After a field sobriety test, officers determined that Ashburn, who reeked of alcohol and had bloodshot, watery eyes, was under he influence of alcohol and placed him under arrest. He was released from jail just before 4 AM.

Initial reports only noted the DWI arrest and Ashburn issued a contrite apology on Wednesday. But late this evening, the CBS affiliate in Sacramento reported that "sources" confirmed that Ashburn had left Faces, a gay nightclub in downtown Sacramento, just prior to his arrest.
Dudes, walk the damn walk for gawdsakes. Walk the walk.
