Not Much, I'm Guessing

This story (posted today) at the Charter home page just struck me as an odd way of framing the question...

Thanks Ted Kennedy...

Just for the record, Rude Pundit offers a compendium of Edward M. Kennedy's many accomplishments. Hard to argue against the Liberal Lion's profound and lasting impact on modern American life.

8.26.2009

Keepin' it Classy!

I can't wait until Dubya kicks the bucket, so I can say stuff like this about him:
"We live in Edward Kennedy's America not only in the consequential legislation that he sponsored and saw through the Senate, but also in the afterlife of the vulgar political sham on which Senator Kennedy relied..."

And this:
"No doubt Kennedy the man was a despicable cad, a notorious rogue, and, until late in life, a certified drunk."

And this:
"I can’t say that I’ll miss him...Ted Kennedy supported the expansion of the welfare state and a culture of dependency on government, made all the more tragic given how ensnared his life was to dependency. He should have known better given his own life and that of his family."

And these from the comments section of me own local fishwrap:
"He had a miserable death; only for that I'm sorry. Politics aside as this's a "non-partisan" issue: I have no sympathy for anyone who gets away with murder. Yes, dropping ones car in the drink, abandoning another person in that car, leaving them to drown a terrifying death, hurdly swimming away & NOT reporting this accident until confering with others the following day is a crime. He did not deserve any political office."

"This fixation on the left RE "hate." There are instances in which hate is appropriate, such as for racists (what's with affirmative action?). Ed (Ted?) Kennedy definitely deserves hate."

Oh man, I can't wait to get nose-to-nose with some teabaggers tomorrow night.

Proud Liberal

Ted Kennedy, proud, unapologetic liberal.
"Kennedy's great gift was fighting for progress without shame or obfuscation, making the moral argument for liberalism, and always trying to move the ball forward, inch by inch if that's all he could get and in great leaps if the opportunity presented itself....

He was everything the conservatives hate: a proud, fighting liberal who didn't shirk from the label. Each day his presence was a rebuke to everything they believed in. So when you hear the inevitable lugubrious paeans from the right over the next few days, keep in mind that their movement and its people spent the last 40 years treating Ted Kennedy the way they treat Barack Obama today -- with utter, single-minded contempt.

And all the while, Kennedy just kept going, getting more concessions from Republicans by being true to his principles than mealy mouthed centrism ever did. There's a lesson in that."

Brad Lidge...

...needs to get saved.

Ted Kennedy....

...now that's a poltician you could sit down and have a beer with.

Taibbi on HCR

It's not available online just yet, but Matt Taibbi takes on health care reform in this month's issue of Rolling Stone, (Issue 1086, Beatles on the cover):
"Let's start with the obvious: America has not only the worst but the dumbest health care system in the developed world. It's become a black leprosy eating away at the American experiment -- a bureaucracy so insipid and mean and illogical that even our darkest criminal minds wouldn't be equal to dreaming it up on purpose. The system doesn't work for anyone. It cheats patients and leaves them to die, denies insurance to 47 million Americans, forces hospitals to spend billions haggling over claims, and systematically bleeds and harasses doctors with the specter of catastrophic litigation."

RIP: Ted Kennedy

Next Battle in the War on Teabaggers

Memo to all SLO Party Crashers: Local political gadfly and unelectable wingnut Matt Kokkonen is hosting his very own "Town Hall" meeting Thursday night in SLO, 7 o'clock at the Sands Motel, 1930 Monterey Street. I'm figuring this gathering is going to be a bit more contentious than last Saturday's, but I'll be there, Obama t-shirt and all... Here's the text of the invite, which I only acquired because a woman at work mistakenly sent it to a few of the wrong people (if you know what I mean):
"Matt Kokkonen announced today that he will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting on health care. "Our US Congressional representative Lois Capps is AWOL, Where is Lois? Health care is a critical issue facing our society. It accounts for 1/6th of our economy. Do you want the government to control this sector? Do you wan the government to make our medical care decisions and lead us into socialist medical care or do you believe that private insurance and capitalism will serve our society better. We need to make changes to our health care system, but is the government the right agent? "Let us hear from you," he said. [sic]"
I'll be there with bells on.

What FDR Said...

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much, it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt

What's the Plan?

I've had lots of people congratulating me on my star turn on the teevee this week -- and a few snide remarks from the teabaggers here in the office -- but also lots of questions from people that actually highlight one of the weaknesses in our crusade. Here we are, rallying for health care reform, and I still have people who ostensibly agreed with the idea asking me, "What is the plan?" To that end, I will acknowledge that a 1000-page bill can be a daunting, complex document, not to mention that it's ripe to be picked apart by opponents, but the bottom line is this: The current system is ineffective, unjust and unsustainable.

Daily Kos had an excellent post up this morning that helps explain just what "health care reform" would mean and how it would look once achieved. You can check it out here, with a succinct five-minute video and a chart showing how every American fits into the big picture.

In the interest of helping people make a simple pitch in favor of health care reform, here are a few bullet points I try to hit when I talk about this issue:
1. Health care, in the wealthiest and most egalitarian nation on Earth, is a human right and not a privilege.
2. Under the Obama plan, no one will be forced to give up their existing insurance plan. If you like your current coverage, you are entitled to keep it.
3. We already have "health care rationing." It comes when insurance company bureaucrats make cost/benefit decisions that ultimately dictate whether they will pay for medical care you need.
4. Medicare is a government-run health care plan!
5. A health care system that compels the un- and under-insured to seek treatment in local emergency rooms is financially unsustainable.
6. The time for reform is now. If we don't use the momentum generated with the election of Barack Obama, it will be another 20 years before anyone ever attempts to fix the system again.

What are we waiting for?

Surprise Ending

This post by dday at Hullaballoo illustrates two things: 1) what's wrong with the health care system in America, and 2) why few people in America hear about such matters.

Exceptionally Short-sighted and Stupid

"American exceptionalism" means that we get screwed over by politicians, corporations and lunatics every time -- and have to like it, apparently. We defer to the unjust, the immoral, and the crazy. Every time. It's our default position here in America. We may think we're "exceptional," but it's on the left-hand-side of the bell curve -- the tail-end, if you will -- as opposed to the right.

Ladies Love El Hornito

From the comments section at the local rag following the Hornet's TV appearance...
For the young ladies reading this let the record also say that Hornet isn't just good looking but he's smart as well. Thanks for being there Hornet, you were spot on and represented the enlightened side very well.
I wonder if any of those old folks were rude to you? The reporter picked one from each side to speak. You were sharp and articulate and the woman they used to represent the anti health care side seemed scattered and confused. I should take it easy on her though, I've been interviewed a few times and get so nervous that I probably sound pretty goofy myself.

Good job Hornet.

Rabble-Rouser

Just got back from an "anti-Obamacare" protest in downtown San Luis Obispo, CA. Rolled up on my bike in a blaze of glory chanting "O-ba-ma, O-ba-ma...!" Solo, mind you; me and 100 or so wingnuts. They were all over me, slightly taken aback by this interloper, but ready to engage. One little gray-haired lady said she didn't understand why she should have to pay for other peoples' health care. "How's that Medicare working out for you, Ma'am?" I asked. It only went downhill from there.

Hope to have video after the 6-o'clock news, because once the KSBY guy saw me roll up, he knew I was Daniel in the lions' den and that was where the drama would be.

Hope they don't edit it down to where I look like a lunatic, but my opening statement was this:
"Health care, in the richest, most prosperous country in the world, is a human right and not a privilege. If we don't find out a way to fix this system, we are failing each other as human beings."
It only got better from there.

UPDATE: Here's the print version of KSBY's story on yesterday's rally...
"We don't want socialized medicine and it looks like that's what it's leading to," said Joanie Brown. "We want [Capps] to come out and say that she's for the people and for us who she represents, we pay her to represent us."

However not everyone agrees.

"Socialism as a political strategy is like what they had in Russia it's not what we're talking about," said Jim Mallon.

As the only pro-reform person present, San Luis Obispo resident Jim Mallon shared his thoughts Saturday. He says healthcare is a human right, not a privilege.

"I think the system as it's set up now ends up being more expensive than it needs to be," said Mallon.

California in Free-Fall

New unemployment statistics show California's jobless rate is the highest it has ever been since they started keeping records...

California's unemployment rate took an unexpected leap in July, reaching a post-Word War II high of 11.9%. The increase contrasts with the national rate, which declined slightly over the same period, and reflects ongoing weakness in the state's battered construction and financial services industries.

The state lost a net 35,800 jobs last month, more than any other state, the U.S. Labor Department said today. It has lost 760,200 jobs over the last year.

Every category of nonfarm jobs in the state except education and health services experienced year-over-year losses. The construction sector was the hardest hit, shedding 18.6% of its jobs. Manufacturing jobs fell 8.7% from the same time last year.
The so-called "U6" unemployment rate, which includes people whose benefits have run out and those who have simply given up looking for work, is reportedly significantly more than 20%.

Two-Party System

When you get right down to it, our political system offers us little more than a choice between a bunch of total fuckups who destroy everything in their way without compunction (Republicans) and a collection of ineffective milquetoast wienies who snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at every opportunity (Democrats).

The Full Barney

Here's another clip of Barney Frank dismissing the lunachick teabagger for the space alien that she is. I only hope I can be so dismissively derisively contemptuously eloquent when I face off with the teabaggers in Atascadero, CA on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

BTW: I'm taking ideas for questions to ask the congressman (a right-winger named Kevin McCarthy) should I manage to get up to the mic, so let me know what you think I should say!

Remembering Satori

For everyone who ever knew this amazing friend...

Teabaggers Coming to Central Coast

Finally going to get to see the Central Coast teabaggers in action. September 2 in Atascadero. I'll be the one wearing the Obama t-shirt while provoking brain-dead wingnuts to make stupid racist comments while they compare Barack Obama to Adolph Hitler. I'll have my camera in tow, and I'm planning to ask a question, something along the lines of:
ME: "Thank you Congressman McCarthy for giving us this opportunity to discuss the issue of health care reform. Let me begin by stating for the record that I believe health care in America is not a privilege but a human right. [Crowd boos.] My question to you today sir pertains to the issue of government-run health care. Why should I prefer that my health care decisions be subject to the scrutiny of a private-sector bureaucrat -- whose very compensation may be contingent on denying my claim [crowd boos louder] -- rather than a public-service bureaucrat who has no hidden agenda and whose only interest is to ensure that I and my doctor are making sound medical choices." [crowd boos me off the dais.]
Look for me on the news.

So It Goes

Granted they are his wars and all, but doesn't it seem like we all cared a bit more about Iraq and Afghanistan when George W. Bush was president? It's worth remembering that both are ongoing disasters...

Epic Smackdown: Thank You Barney Frank

Behold in amazement as Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank delivers an epic smackdown on a teabagger lunatic at one of his town hall meetings.
Let's just say Barney doesn't mince any words...

Frank: When you ask me that question I'm going to revert to my ethnic heritage and answer your question with a question. On what planet do you spend most of your time?
[....]

You want me to answer the question? Yes. As you stand there with a picture of the President defaced to look like Hitler and compare the effort to increase health care to the Nazis, my answer to you is as I said before, it is a tribute to the First Amendment that this kind of vile, contemptible nonsense is so freely propagated. Ma'am, trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to argue with a dining room table. I have no interest in doing it
That's how you deal with these fools.

8.18.2009

What's Changed?

Remember back when armed and angry liberal mobs gathered outside George W. Bush's appearances and threatened violence against supporters of the president?? Remember that left-wing nutjob who stood outside a Bush town hall with a loaded .45 holstered to his leg and a sign referencing bloody revolution? Remember those "socialists" who showed up outside Crawford, TX, with AR-15s strapped to their backs and went nose-to-nose with nervous conservative activists who were only exercising their First amendment rights...?? Yeah, me neither.

It's worth considering that the more time local law enforcement authorities and the Secret Service have to spend following these gun-toting yahoos around -- mostly to make sure they don't fire off a few rounds in a crowd of people by accident -- the less time they have to do what they are really there for...which is protecting the President of the United States from assassination. I heard a really good point on this issue today: You don't worry about the idiot in the crowd with a gun strapped to his leg, you worry about the sniper in the trees, and the more time wasted on 2nd-Amendment idiots the less time dedicated to scanning the trees and the rooftops.

In the meantime, someone is going to get shot.

Here's Who Ought to Be Shot

A woman who yells "Heil Hitler!" at a Jewish man making a passionate argument in favor of nationalized health care. She follows up that classy move by making crying baby noises directly in his face when he complains about having to pay $8000 for a 2-hour hospital visit.

Yes, you read that right...

I'm sure that guy would never hit a woman, but if ever there were a time for an exception to that rule, this was it.

Teabagger Battle Cry

[with apologies to Nathan Hale]:

"I regret that I have but one life to lose for the defeat of comprehensive health care reform."

Why Negotiate with Terrorists?

Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley (who is the chief GOP negotiator on health care reform) says he'll vote against any reform legislation, even if he gets everything he wants in the bill. What this means of course, is that it's Democrats who are going to kill health care reform. Their efforts to water down the legislation to appease transparently intransigent Republicans is only going to result in weak tea, weak tea that the Republicans will then blame Democrats for passing.

The best strategy at this point is should be to go all-in, use that 59-41 majority to pass comprehensive health care reform with a strong public option (in lieu of single-payer, which unfortunately remains a political non-starter) and make the Republicans filibuster.

I mean, what's the friggin point of even dealing with these people?

Cradle to the Grave Lunacy

Turns out people who believe President Obama wants to use "death panels" to pull the plug on Grandma are the same people who believe he's a Kenyan-born Manchurian president with a fake birth certificate.

Sex Scandals: Not Just for Governors Anymore

Sort of amusing story of moral turpitude...

Staunch-Catholic and married-father-of-five Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino finds himself ensnared in a sex/extortion scandal and confesses to police that six years ago he hooked up with some trollop on a table at a restaurant after closing time...
Two weeks later, the married father of five gave Karen Cunagin Sypher $3,000 after she said she needed an abortion and didn't have health insurance, according to a summary of Pitino's July 12 statement to police.
"But wait!," sez Pitino's attorney, the money wasn't for the abortion, it was so that the woman could obtain medical coverage. Well, that's mighty thoughtful of Coach P, and in keeping with the Church's opposition to abortion, I might add, presumably keeping Pitino on the path to heaven.

The tawdry sex outside of marriage part? Not so much.

And who ever heard of a woman signing up for health insurance while pregnant and then having said insurance pay for the abortion?!? Isn't that what's known as a pre-existing condition?

A Legitimate Question

Seeing all those apoplectic blue-haired teabaggers going loco en la cabeza at the town hall meetings makes me wonder if perhaps Medicare might pay for mental health counseling?

Double-Standard

I've been tossed out of more than one political event for airing political views contrary to those espoused by the majority. How is it these obnoxious teabaggers aren't getting tossed out on their ears? Oh wait, that's right, my offenses involved the T-shirt I was wearing, not the gun on my hip.

Crossing the Rubicon into Stoopidland

Plumbing the depths of teh stoopid so you don't have to:
The conservative opinion magazine Human Events was reputedly Ronald Reagan’s favorite read, and to this day fancies itself the house organ for the hard-right intelligentsia.
[...]
In other words, these people have gone full-blown lunatic on us. Curious, I also looked up the Investors Business Daily editorial cited by Human Events. Published a week ago Friday, it is chock full of lies, distortions and other foolishness, such as the claim that the House bill would compel senior citizens to undergo mandatory euthanasia counseling every five years.

But my favorite part of the editorial deals with the British health-care system, which if you believe IBD is basically condemning the old and disabled to die.
“People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn’t have a chance in the U.K., where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless,” the editorial claims.

Of course, that same Stephen Hawking who wouldn’t have a chance in the United Kingdom was in fact born in the United Kingdom, has lived his entire life in the United Kingdom and lives there still today, at the ripe old age of 67. (He was in fact hospitalized earlier this month.) Hawking is, you might say, living, breathing proof that these people are first-class fools.
Perhaps if Stephen Hawking got himself a voice synthesizer that speaks in Cockney rhyming slang it would be more clear to the wingnut eejits that he's from Britain?

Nowhatahmean, guv'nah? Roight!

Issue Creep

With decades of deceitful hand-wringing and crocodile tears shed over such legitimately divisive issues as gun control and abortion, who'd have thunk it would be improving the nation's health care system that would ultimately send the conservative wingnuts 'round the bend into cuckoo land?

Shameful and Embarrassing

We really have come to a shameful and embarrassing point in American political discourse. George Carlin once said (loosely paraphrasing): "Think how dumb the average American is, and then remember that half the people are dumber than that." With the latest "flat-birther" tactics, disrupting open meetings with lawmakers and intimidating political opponents, we have reached the pinnacle nadir of Teh Dangerously Stoopid.
All through the Bush years, progressive right-wing watchers refused to call it "fascism" because, though we kept looking, we never saw clear signs of a deliberate, committed institutional partnership forming between America's conservative elites and its emerging homegrown brownshirt horde. We caught tantalizing signs of brief flirtations -- passing political alliances, money passing hands, far-right moonbat talking points flying out of the mouths of "mainstream" conservative leaders. But it was all circumstantial, and fairly transitory. The two sides kept a discreet distance from each other, at least in public. What went on behind closed doors, we could only guess. They certainly didn't act like a married couple.

Now, the guessing game is over. We know beyond doubt that the Teabag movement was created out of whole cloth by astroturf groups like Dick Armey's FreedomWorks and Tim Phillips' Americans for Prosperity, with massive media help from FOX News. We see the Birther fracas -- the kind of urban myth-making that should have never made it out of the pages of the National Enquirer -- being openly ratified by Congressional Republicans. We've seen Armey's own professionally-produced field manual that carefully instructs conservative goon squads in the fine art of disrupting the democratic governing process -- and the film of public officials being terrorized and threatened to the point where some of them required armed escorts to leave the building. We've seen Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner applauding and promoting a video of the disruptions and looking forward to "a long, hot August for Democrats in Congress."

This is the sign we were waiting for -- the one that tells us that yes, kids: we are there now. America's conservative elites have openly thrown in with the country's legions of discontented far right thugs. They have explicitly deputized them and empowered them to act as their enforcement arm on America's streets, sanctioning the physical harassment and intimidation of workers, liberals, and public officials who won't do their political or economic bidding.

This is the catalyzing moment at which honest-to-Hitler fascism begins. It's also our very last chance to stop it.
Unless we do, someone is going to get shot.

Why We Need the Public Option

SLO Tribune, Letters to the Editor, August 4
Need public option

Except for a couple of accidents, I have been in good health throughout my life. However, at age 61 I was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer.

Twenty-one months of chemotherapy have gone well, and I am in what may be a remission. However, the treatment has wiped out my energy, and I cannot maintain a job that would pay my bills and health insurance.

In three months, my COBRA option goes to full cost and state disability runs out. No job, no assets, no insurance. This is the wall. I will become one of the 46 million uninsured Americans. Is this unforeseen development going to plunge me into bankruptcy and homeless-ness? My only solution is to become healthy enough to earn a living again. But with this prior condition, who will insure me?

I am in need of a public insurance option. Why is it that, when I became seriously ill, I was quickly reduced to a second-class citizen in the wealthiest nation in the world?

Our pending health care reform needs to deny the profit motives of those who enrich themselves off a broken system and effectively serve the needs of the common citizens of the greatest nation on Earth.
