On the Separation of Sports and State

Lately, when I see one of these articles about an athlete declining an invitation from President Obama to visit the White House because his (or her) "political views differ from his," my first thought is always one of bemused incredulity.

The simple fact is, regardless of what some Tea Party nincompoop believes, Barack Obama is a center-right moderate politician. He and his policies are much closer to those of the Eisenhower/Nixon Republicans than they are to the Roosevelt/Johnson Democrats and, although I personally respect the President as an admirable and worthy representative of our nation, his policies are far too timid to be labeled as liberal, progressive or -- dare I say it -- socialist. There are those would would tar the President with the socialist label. They allege he's Muslim, Kenyan, somehow less than American. They are, quite simply, delusional and/or cynically dishonest. There is no room for debate about that among rational people.

Then I remember that there is no way on God's green Earth that I would have ever gone to the White House to shake the hand of its previous occupant. Of course, when you take into account the world-class ineptitude and the war-based-on-lies and the cratered economy and the Hurricane Katrina debacle and the general assault on civil liberties, we Dirty Fucking Hippies were clearly right about him.

Ground Zero Victory Lap

Today's talking point for the teabaggers and wingnuts: President Obama's visit to Ground Zero later today is little more than a "victory lap" to score "political points" following the death of Osama bin Laden.

Yeah, because George W. Bush would never do such a thing.

Justice Delayed

US military forces finally caught up to Osama bin Laden on the 8th anniversary of George W. Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech.

Travel Restrictions

Must be interesting to find yourself a former US President who cannot travel to certain countries for fear of being arrested on war crimes charges. Switzerland and Spain are definitely out.

The Bush Family

They're not like you and I the rest of us.

UPDATE: My use of "you and I" has sparked a bit of a familial grammar debate. Some say "you and me" would have been correct. There's an old rule of thumb that says if you remove one of the pronouns you should be able to determine the correct sentence structure. I maintain that my phrase intends to say "They're not like...I am."

PBM sez: "I think if you include the 'am' (or in the original sentence 'are') then you are correct, however if you remove it then 'me' is correct."

Gigi sez: "Obviously the problem has many angles and a changed word here or there would require a different solution. Analyzed as originally written, though, I think 'like' is used as a preposition and thus requires 'me.'"

These are the kinds of things "we" talk about around the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Feel free to offer your thoughts on the matter in the comments.

Reading is Fundamental

"Somebody threw a book at President Obama. If you're trying to scare a president by throwing a book at him, you're one president too late." – David Letterman

Wise Words from a Uniter-not-a-Divider

It's times like these we must seek guidance and counsel in the words of orators from the past...
“America counts millions of Muslims amongst our citizens, and Muslims make an incredibly valuable contribution to our country. Muslims are doctors, lawyers, law professors, members of the military, entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, moms, and dads. And they need to be treated with respect. In our anger and emotion, our fellow Americans must treat each other with respect. … They love America just as much as I do.”

On Sept. 17, 2001, so said President George W. Bush.

Same Old 30%

Recall that about 30% of the nation supported George W. Bush right until the bitter end, and note that 30% of those surveyed in this CBS News poll support the Teabagger Movement.

Coincidence? No, coinciDENSE.

Confessional

The Republicans may have their panties in a twist because Barack Obama offered Joe Sestak a job, but in the meantime it appears George W. Bush has finally once again confessed to committing a war crime. Isn't there some way we can toss that SOB in jail?

Dubious Milestone

This week we passed the $1-trillion mark in spending on the stupid wars that George W. Bush got us into...the same ones Barack Obama has yet to get us out of.

One trillion fucking dollars. The nation could sure use that money right about now, don'cha think?

Dubya declared Mission Accomplished more than 7 years ago.

BFD [Sarcasm Intended]

What self-respecting reporter would write a story like this? Let me spell it out for you: George W. Bush is the worst president in the history of the United States. Nothing is ever going to change that.

Freak

Watch in the clip below as George W. Bush wipes his hand on Bill Clinton's shirt after shaking hands with victims of the Haitian earthquake. The handshake comes at :11. the wipe at :13. Dude's got serious issues.

Rhymes with Liar

If Mark McGwire is a "liar," what does that make this guy? Or this guy? Or this guy? Or this gal? I only ask because, you know, lying to get us into a war that's cost billions of dollars, destroyed millions of lives, killed thousands of people and made us a laughingstock the world over is one thing...but lying about taking steroids while playing baseball takes it to a whole 'nother league of malfeasance.
Good evening. Because this is a family broadcast, we probably can't say what we'd like to about the news today that Mark McGwire—the home run hitter, the family favorite from the St. Louis Cardinals—stopped lying today and admitted that he did it while on steroids. For those of us who were raising young baseball fans and baseball players who looked up to Mark McGwire, that summer of ‘98 was magical stuff, as he and Sammy Sosa vied back and forth for the title of Single Season Home Run King. He didn't tell the truth to Congress or to his fans until finally, formally coming clean today. He's been unable to get into the Hall of Fame and, apparently—even for him—the shame here was too much.

Harrumph...Who Knew?

Watch Mary Matalin Cruella DeVille explain how President Bush "inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation's history."

I'm pretty sure she's talking about September 11, 2001.

Classic Overbuild

In the parlance of the real estate appraisal industry, this is what's called an over-improvement...
...the [George W.] Bush Library [is] a 225,000 square foot affair that will sit on a 22-acre site to be completed in 2013, at a cost of between $200 and $500 million.
Seems a little on the large side to hold two stinking books. [1] [2]

Better Than Bush? Obama's a Shoo-in!

US State Department reacts to Obama's Nobel Peace Prize:
A spokesman for the State Department had this take on President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize, reports CNN:

"Certainly from our standpoint, this gives us a sense of momentum -- when the United States has accolades tossed its way, rather than shoes."

The comment was made by Assistant Secretary PJ Crowley, a spokesman for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Heh...clearly a reference to this classic moment, which pretty much sums up the Bush years and -- now that I think about it -- also explains a lot about why the committee came out of the blue and gave Obama the NPP. This is what the world has thought of us for the past eight years:
