I just showed off my voting booth camera phone photo to a friend at work. [I had no idea which way she was leaning, but she's got a sunny personality and a bright smile, so I figured she must be one of us.]
She took a look at the photo, gasped openly and said, "You voted for Barack?!?!"
"Hell yeah," I said, perhaps a bit too defensively. "Who did you vote for, McCain?!?"
"I don't vote," she said, "But Barack Obama scares me. I think he's a baaad man."
This is a woman who once dropped the N-bomb during a mundane, water-cooler office conversation the two of us had a few years back. She said it just like she was telling me the sky is blue. No one else heard. I actually took her aside then and explained to her why the use of that word is flat-out verboten.
Now she thinks Barack Obama is a baaad man.
We've still got a long way to go in this country before we've eradicated ignorance, fear and bigotry.
