Political Football

When it comes to talk about compromise on economic and budgetary policy, the White House seems willing to grant the Republicans all the say-so on the shape of the negotiating table, the size of the negotiating room, the color of the paint on the walls in the negotiating room and the pattern on the carpet on the floor in the negotiating room, not to mention the depth of the spending cuts the Democrats will ultimately get cornered into agreeing to. But when you read a report suggesting that in exchange for those cuts the Republicans “may be open to revenue increases” (read: raising taxes) that sound you hear is Lucy toeing up the football and encouraging Charlie Brown to take another run at it.
