When I hear California health officials attempting to calm the public's fears of radiation contamination along the Pacific coast by noting that the Fukashima plant is 5000 miles away from us, I feel the need to remind them:
THE TSUNAMI MADE IT ALL THE WAY HERE!
This facility (the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant) is about 12 miles from where I sit. So when County officials tell people they can come on down to the health department to get their potassium iodide pills, they shouldn't be surprised people have begun stocking up on them, hoarding them and even selling them on Craigslist.
UPDATE: Looks like Diablo Canyon is 9th on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's risk assessment list for the nation's 104 nuclear reactors (some plants have more than one reactor).
