Well, the Stars Wars bar scene that was the Republicans' CPAC convention finally came to a close yesterday. The fete concluded with a straw poll the gave majority support to Ron Paul, a man who will never win the presidency (though surely none of the other carnival clowns in the field will have any chance of winning in 2012 either, unless President Obama is caught in flagrante delicto with Oprah Winfrey while doing blow on his Oval Office desk with 50-Cent and Charlie Sheen).
The so-called "Paultards" showed once again that they have the fortitude to hijack Republican events, shouting down Dick Cheney -- to their credit -- with chants of "war criminal," and pigeon-holing Donald Rumseld with "Where's Osama?" heckles.
Paul garnered 30% of the vote, followed by the equally unelectable Mitt "I passed socialized medicine in Massachusetts" Romney with 23%. Relative unknowns Gary Johnson and Chris Christie (the governors of NM and NJ, respectively) pulled in 6% each. Other "presumptive favorites" (and we used that term loosely) Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin, were crushed, gathering the support of just 5% and 3% of those in attendance.
Bottom line: The Republican Party is in big, big trouble in 2012. They have no one on the bench that Americans can take seriously as presidential timber.
