Purple Reign!

One of the more under-appreciated guitar virtuosos out there in musicland is none other than The Purple One from Minneapolis: Prince. Watch here as he joins Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, ELO's Jeff Lynne and George Harrison's son Dhani (among several others) for a rousing version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Prince's guitar starts wailing at about 3:30 of the clip and doesn't stop until he tosses it heavenward and departs the stage as mysteriously as he'd entered.

ADDING: I learned a couple more details about this awesome performance. It came at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. In addition to George Harrison, Prince and Traffic (all represented in this jam), the class that year included ZZ Top, Bob Seger, The Dells and Jackson Browne. Word was Prince was initially reluctant to take over the stage with his riveting solo, fearing he might overshadow George's iconic weeping guitar part (played here I believe by Toto's Steve Lukather), but it was George's son Dahni who wholeheartedly encouranged Prince to play the part.

Dahni, a spooky, virtual twin of his father, can be seen playing acoustic guitar behind Tom Petty and is clearly thrilled with Prince's performance. You can even catch a glimpse of a sly grin just before The Purple One gets going, as if Dahni is thinking, "Oh yeah, this is going to be good."
