Newly installed Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner declined an inviation to travel with President Obama aboard Air Force One to Tucson yesterday and instead chose to stay behind in Washington and...wait for it...host a cocktail party.
Maybe he was afraid he'd tear up at the memorial service?
UPDATE: In fairness, it appears Boehner may have had valid reasons for staying in Washington. Congress was holding its own memorial yesterday afternoon, and with Nancy Pelosi on her way to Tucson, had Boehner gone as well it would have left the leaders of both parties absent from the House's own emotional remembrance. [Though you know he was relieved he wouldn't have to miss Happy Hour.]
