A common problem for conservatives when it comes to “government aid,” be it mortgage relief or unemployment benefits, food stamps or housing assistance, is their fear that some grifter somewhere is going to get over and milk the system for undeserved benefits. Their solution? Cut benefits to the bone for everyone -- casting a blind eye to legitimate need -- with as much sanctimonious judgmental acrimony as they can muster and make anyone drawing assistance feel as un-American as possible. Meanwhile, the Treasury is shoveling $800-billion-plus right through front door to bail out AIG, Goldman Sachs et al., who use a good portion of the money to pay millions of dollars in bonuses to the very same motley fools who got us into this mess in the first place.
