Picture a walkable neighborhood. You lose weight each time you walk to the grocery store. You stroll home from last call without waiting for a cab. You spend less money on your car—or you don't own a car. When you shop, you support your local economy. You talk to your neighbors.
I'll be the first to admit I'm pretty lucky where I live. I measure the distance to things in blocks (generally 1-to-5), although I did one time prove to a friend just how close Bull's Tavern was to my house by stepping it off with him -- in a decidedly serpentine manner, I will admit -- and coming in at exactly 400 paces.
Suffice to say, my walkability score was 97 out of 100. I can't even guess where those other 3 points went, because I even walk to work, and that's not factored into this equation. As an added bonus, and I'm sure it was only a quirk in the google maps that had nothing to do with me, the nearest "grocery store" listed was a 7-Eleven.
So what's your walk score?
