Mining Disaster, Labor Trouble All Too Common

Harlan County, USA

Not much has changed, apparentley, in 31 years. The bosses are still demonizing unions, ignoring safety regulations and looking to cut costs at every opportunity, and miners are still dying two thousand feet underground. Six are still missing in Utah. They're now presumed dead and likely will have to be given up as lost forever. Three dead rescuers will soon be returned to the ground, and six others remain hospitalized. Digby's got a lot to say on the matter, as does Ariana.

Coal mining is dangerous business, no one has ever claimed otherwise, but all indications are that the death and destruction that occured at Utah's Crandall Canyon Mine came as the result of negligence that is nothing if not criminal.

"Without organization you're a lone individual, without influence and without recognition of any kind." --John L. Lewis, Pres. United Mine Workers, 1920-1960.
