What's up, y'all? The Summer Tour is underway! Booty and I headed down south with Reek, Cones, Whitey, GR, Sonya and some others last night for 5 hours of killer music at the one and only the Santa Barbara Bowl.
The lineup included The Expendables, Ozomatli, Slightly Stoopid and G. Love and Special Sauce. We actually missed The Expendables, taking their name literally and instead hitting up a watering hole down the block that featured cheap beer and was easily identifiable by the huge stuffed COW on the roof. I forget what it was called.
Ozomatli were their usual multi-cultural, hyper-percussive, horn-heavy selves. They have always reminded me of WAR for the 21st century. It was during the Ozomatli set that my girlfriend nudged me and said, "Remember Elaine from Seinfeld?"
"Yeah."
"Well there she is right over there."
And sure enough, there was Elaine and her family. Thank God, I thought, at least I'm not the oldest person here now.
I had never heard Slighty Stoopid before. Take it from me, that's a band that likes the demon weed. In between their reggae-infused hip-hop raps, they did some pretty good punk tunes and they got a real pit going, something the Bowl's pro'ly not super stoked on, but the powers that be let the stoner kids have their fun.
G.Love hit the stage precisely at 8:40, just like the cop down at the Cow on the Roof Bar had told me he would and peopleletmetellya... He rocked the house!
At one point my girl, who has always humored my passion for GLaSS without ever fully understanding it, leaned over and said to me, "It's not like this is some superstar or anything."
"You mean like Paul McCartney?"
I swear to you, the next notes coming off the stage were "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" Forget the damn resurrection, it's times like that when I begin to believe there is a God.
Anyway Booty got a clip of GLaSS and I'll be posting it ASAP, unless we find ourselves late for the airport in the morning.
UPDATE!!: Hot off the press, G.Love and Special Sauce live at the Santa Barbara Bowl:
Next up on the tour, Booty and I are heading to NYC -- Brooklyn NY, to be precise --to see the Beastie Boys in all their glory on their home turf. Flight leaves at 11:30am PST Tuesday. Probably going to be light posting for a few days until I can get my bearings over there, but you can be sure the travelogue is going to be chock full of tall tales, near misses and close escapes. Hell we might even see if we can end up in jail before we're done.
