We've got some half a million federal workers furloughed, Head Start and Meals on Wheels programs idled, national parks are closed, cancer research studies are shelved at the CDC, passport applications are delayed at the State Department, new Medicare and Social Security applications are not being processed, the Environmental Protection Agency is shuttered, and the Food and Drug Administration can't ensure the safety of your food.
But the severity of the government shutdown can't be measured (and no one will take any real steps to end it) until our overlords in financial markets start to get "nervous" about the stock market and interest rates.
