A local newspaper reporter writes a deeply personal op-ed stemming from the Trayvon Martin case (in "letter to my son" style), and the Comments section below the column turns into a racist cesspool of bitterly dismissive disinformation and cynically irrelevant, pointless vitriol.
An excerpt of what she said:
"Following the acquittal of George Zimmerman, my heart sank as I watched my son laugh and play with his cousins and little sister. At the tender age of 6, he is busy tinkering with Legos and throwing his baseball, too young to comprehend what happened in the Trayvon Martin case. And yet, I had to consider the possibility that one day this veil of innocence will be lifted and that he, too, may be treated with suspicion just for being a young black man..."
Here's how the racist jerks of San Luis Obispo responded:
~So in a nutshell son; be wary and suspicious of white folks. Listen to what the Rev. Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton have to say, and son never, never forget that your birthright is victimhood.
~From you article it appears that your son won't be attending S L O High School or any other WHITE school...? U working for The Tribune I'd bet your boss is White...!
~ The wrong profile? Well lets see; it has been reported that Trayvon Martin's text messages about his marijuana smoking, buying and selling were not allowed in the trial. Nobody has disputed that Trayvon Martin was pounding Zimmerman's face and head. Based on those two things alone, it is safe to say that it is the media's profile of Martin as a child eating candy that is inaccurate.
And, Trayvon's friend was just recently on TV explaining how that she and Trayvon were discussing the possibility that Zimmerman was a homosexual during their phone conversation. Now there's a profile for ya. Trayvon, apparently thinking Zimmerman was gay, decided to beat Zimmerman to a pulp.
The "hoodie". Black gang members and Rappers have made the "Hoodie" a symbol of their lifestyle. A lifestyle that according to Rappers lyrics promotes murder, drug use, and prostitution.
~ Trayvon Martin had no hesitation attacking Zimmerman. I'm watching the news and there are many Tayvon Martins. Am I racist now? I feel like I am being told by the media, and by our President, that my time is coming. That it is time for me to pay what they feel is owed, and they would take it by force if given the chance.
~ Trayvon was not an innocent angel and I'm sick of bleeding hearts playing up that he was. He played a big role in getting himself killed. It's pretty undisputed that this 6'11" teenager had ditched Zimmerman, but came back around to confront him, and then proceeded to beat Zimmerman's head against the concrete. I would have shot him too. [Note: this one's my favorite. According to this eejit the scary black kid was six-foot-eleven inches tall.]
Whatevs. Fact is, a grown man initiated a confrontation with a teenage boy, then he shot and killed him, and now he walks the streets a free man. He even got his gun back (and, incredibly, his attorney says he "needs it now more than ever"). By my way of thinking, that's the textbook definition of an injustice.
