Staged Altruism

I was willing to give Mitt Romney the benefit of a doubt when he and his campaign called yesterday's appearance in Ohio a "Disaster Relief Rally," despite the fact that his call for material donations (canned foods, diapers, bottled water, energy bars etc...) runs directly counter to the American Red Cross's long-standing policy of soliciting monetary donations -- which are easier to collect, handle, transport, track and process.

And then I read about this...
...the last-minute nature of the call for donations left some in the campaign concerned that they would end up with an empty truck. So the night before the event, campaign aides went to a local Wal Mart and spent $5,000 on granola bars, canned food, and diapers to put on display while they waited for donations to come in, according to one staffer.
