What Are Words For?

So I've got this dictionary at work that I rely on occasionally, the Webster's II New Riverside Dictionary. I keep it on hand (despite easy access to dictionary.com) because, well, you know, every wordsmith needs a good dictionary. The one I have at home is big enough that it sits on its own side stand.

So this particular work dictionary (copyright 1984) purports to contain "55,000 precise definitions, including many new words," which is interesting, because I've actually found four relatively common (and not "new") words that ARE NOT in this dictionary: luddite, swale, screed, and now recuse.

WTF Webster?
