Believe it or not, the owners of the oil rig drilling company that botched the Deepwater Horizon project in the Gulf of Mexico last year -- in the process killing 11 rig workers, millions of fish, thousands of animals and fouling miles and miles of beaches -- have granted huge bonuses to company executives for what they called the company's "best year ever in safety performance." When your press release on the topic opens with the words: "Notwithstanding the tragic loss of life in the Gulf of Mexico..." you ought to know you're soon going to have a significant PR problem on your hands. [And the firm has since apologized, though it did not rescind the bonuses].
