Irony may not be dead, but Blair River is. Mr. River is was the 575-pound commercial spokesman for the Heart Attack Grill, an Arizona fast-food restaurant that boasts -- boasts -- of serving up some of the most patently unhealthy food allowable under the law. Their burgers are sold by the pound, their French fries are deep fried in heavy lard, and smoking in the restaurant is encouraged. Their slogan is: "Taste...worth dying for!"
Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good burger as much as the next guy. Back in the day my favorite burger place (RG's Giant Burgers in SB, CA) even renamed my personal special order burger the "heart attack burger." But when the whole premise of your restaurant is to mock the dietary scolds who warn against unhealthy eating, and then your morbidly obese spokesman dies at the age of 29, well, you're just asking for it. In this commercial clip, it's clear Blair River gets winded just trying to read through the script.
Arizona, hating on brown people and worshiping guns isn't all they do.
Believe it or not, as of this moment, the Blair River spot is still up and running at the Heart Attack Grill's website. "In some cases," the disclaimer goes, "mild death may occur."
CBS Sunday Morning's Bill Geist did a tongue-in-cheek fluff piece on the Heart Attack Grill a couple of years ago. You can see that story here.
