Was out and about yesterday after work and I caught a few minutes of The Karel Show on the radio. He shared some emotional memories about Elizabeth Taylor, reminding the audience [and me!] about a lot of things they [and I!] may have forgotten about the screen legend, like how much good she did for the gay community with her fund-raising for HIV research and her friendship with young Ryan White and her loyalty to good friend Rock Hudson to the very end.
Karel then opened the phone lines, I'm sure expecting to begin a segment during which listeners could share their memories of the great Elizabeth Taylor. The first caller launched into a completely insane and idolatrous rant about how Jennifer Garner will one day turn out to be a bigger star than Elizabeth Taylor ever was. I shot a double-take at my car radio and almost drove off the road. Jennifer Who? Jennifer Freaking Garner!?!? WTF and ZOMFG, you should have heard Karel let that guy have it...
"Fifty years from now," he explained indignantly, "Jennifer Garner will be gone. She. Will. Be. Gone. And Elizabeth Taylor will still be the biggest female star Hollywood has ever seen."
Jennifer Garner? It was weird, and I'll bet even Jennifer Garner would have been embarrassed by the comparison.
