When I read these stories about how we need to cut federal spending by tossing 389,000 kids out of Head Start and laying off 4,000 FBI agents, I'm reminded that we're spending $6.7 billion a month in Afghanistan and another $5.5 billion in Iraq. The Pentagon's annual budget is $685.1 billion. That's more than half of the US government's entire budget.
