Lotto Fever.

For years I've declined to join in lotto fever at my office. There's a group of about 20 people who pool their resources, week after futile week, to buy twenty or fifty or a hundred dollars worth of lotto numbers. The megamillions jackpot was sitting at $355-million yesterday [Note: the winning numbers were apparently pulled in WA and ID last night] when my buddy Joe comes walking up the aisle with this wry grin on his face. He'd just thrown in his ten or twenty bucks or whatever the amount is.

"Do you pitch in with those guys on the lottery?" he asked.

"Nah," I said, "I think the odds are so slim it's silly to play."

"You're probably right," Joe said. "But I just can't stand the thought of all those people [gestures with his thumb over his shoulder] getting rich and walking out of here without me one day, so I'm in."

He makes a good point.
