16th-Century Church Rules

At first blush it would seem the Catholic Church is finally coming around on the use of condoms, but not for the members of the flock you might assume. Pope Benedict has a new book out in which he says the use of condoms may be justified and acceptable for....unmarried couples? No. Teenagers? No. Families that already have enough children? No. Married couples in which one spouse has HIV? Nope. Male prostitutes? Check. Male prostitutes?!? Yes, in another classically myopic, 16th-century-type ruling, the pope says condom use is permissible when contraception is not an issue. Let me repeat that: the pope says condom use is permissible when contraception is not an issue.
