If you happened to catch President Obama’s Q&A with the Democrats yesterday -- {yawn} – you probably noticed he failed to take my advice and deliver a little woodshed punishment to his craven colleagues in the Senate. The session lacked any of the drama or fireworks seen in last week's meeting between Obama and the congressional Republicans. In fact, word is the Dem Q&A was a tightly managed affair, with Senate Majority Harry Reid specifically granting the allotted questions only to senators facing re-election battles in November. Convenient, that.
The President did get off one good line when he reminded those assembled of the brilliant headline in the Village Voice that read: “Republicans Gain 41-59 Majority in Senate,” but it was otherwise a tepid affair, with the very same cautious, pearl-clutching, hanky-wringing senators who make me want to tear my hair out (Reid, Bayh, Lincoln, Leahy) getting most of the face time, and using it mostly to paint themselves as the powerless victims that they are.
Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas was perhaps the most traitorously unctuous of them all, using her time to ask the President whether Democrats in the Senate shouldn’t push back harder against the left wing of her own party rather than worrying about what the Republicans are doing all the time. I kid you not. We can only hope Blanche Lincoln is serving the last few months of hersentence term as a US Senator. With people like her [allegedly] working on the Democratic side of the aisle in the Upper Chamber, we’d be better off having a Republican in the seat so we'd have a clearer view of the enemy.
If Obama had been true to the persona he displayed during his meeting with the Republicans, he would have ripped the Democats a new one...or at least taken off his belt.
