Went to a health care reform rally in town yesterday. It was a well-run event, with several guest speakers, including the head of the local nurses association, a lady who lost her health insurance after she'd retired but before she'd reached Medicare eligibility age, the friend of a seriously ill 18-year-old girl who has already reached her "lifetime cap," and a local doctor who told of her struggles in dealing with insurance company suits who decline to pay for care recommended by medical professionals (can you say "death panels?").
At one point in her talk, the doctor held up a bar chart comparing the health care performance of various western nations, and the US was well behind the usual suspects (all the European nations with socialized medicine). At that point she said:

"If this chart represented the medal count at the Olympic Games, Americans would be outraged and demand that we 'do something about it.' Instead, this chart only represents the performance of our health care system, so no one gives a damn."
