On McGwire and PEDs

If Mark McGwire thought his interview with Bob Costas on the MLB Network was going to help him get out of the hot water he’s been boiling in for the past 5 years, he should know that this fan isn’t turning down the heat. McGwire’s claim that he "never took [steroids] for strength purposes at all" and the only benefit he received from taking drugs was a quicker return from injury (the “I just wanted to get back on the field…” defense) is a complete load of crap.

First of all, and assuming that “return from injury” was the only benefit, then the taking of the drugs by definition gave him the opportunity to play in more games, thus allowing him more opportunities to break Roger Maris’s hallowed record. There's a word for that sort of self-delusion: It's called cheating.

Secondly, there’s this exchange:

Costas: Could you have hit 70 home runs — a home-run ratio greater than anything Babe Ruth did in his time — without using steroids?
McGwire: Absolutely. I was given this gift by the Man Upstairs.

For Mark McGwire to sit there during his [alleged, tearful] mea culpa and claim he could still have been a better hitter than Babe Ruth – BABE freaking RUTH – even without the very drugs that enabled him to play in the games during which he broke the records, just goes to show that he still doesn’t get it. I'd say this interview has done nothing to rehabilitate McGwire's image, nor his legacy (as if there were any chance of ever redeeming that ever again). If anything, I have less respect for him now than I did before, because he still hasn't confessed to what we all know is true: He. Cheated.

And just for the record, the only performance enhancing drugs Babe Ruth ever relied on were hot dogs, whiskey and beer.
