Election Roundup

Your newspaper is probably telling you this morning that the Republican gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia should serve as a warning to Democrats, but we'd do well to remember that Virginia routinely bats its top job between parties like a ping-pong ball, and New Jersey's just outsed top exec. Jon Corzine was so tremendously unpopular the door to the governor's mansion swung wide open for the deeply-flawed Chris Christie.

The better story comes out of upstate New York, where a Democrat won the congressional seat for the first time in forever, and he only did it because the wingnuts like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh came out against the Republican in the race, arguing she was too liberal and instead throwing their support behind a know-nothing paper tiger from the state's Conservative Party. The Republican in the race subsequently dropped out and endorsed the Democrat. Aside from easing the path to victory for the Democrat, this teabagger takeover also put the rest of the nation's moderate Republicans on notice: You will be taken down by the extremists in your party. And that, my friends, portends more victories for Democrats.
