Say Hey!

When Torii Hunter made that error in centerfield for the Angels late in last night's game, it got me to thinking: "Would Willie Mays ever clank a ball off the glove like that?" I looked up his stats and, in addition to those 660 home runs, those 1903 RBIs and that .302 career batting average, there's this: the Say Hey Kid had a career .981 fielding percentage. He made 156 errors in 22 seasons, an average of 7 a year. So then I looked up Torii Hunter's stats: .991 fielding percentage, 28 errors in 10 full seasons. Yep, 2.8 a year!

Other notables:
Joe Dimaggio: .978; 13 years; 8/year
Mickey Mantle: .985; 18 years; 5.9/yr
Ken Griffey Jr.: .985; 20 years; 4.2/yr (several injury shortened years)
Richie Ashburn: .983; 15 years; 7.4/yr
Bernie Williams: .990; 16 years; 3/yr

Bernie Williams, by the way, made just 48 errors in his entire career.

Her's a column with a whole bunch of obscure baseball records.
