Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but last night we were kicking around the following question: When was the last time a Democratic presidential candidate won the office in a landslide?
The answer is 1964.
The answer is 1964.
The election was held on November 3, 1964. [Lyndon] Johnson crushed [Barry] Goldwater in the general election, winning over 61 percent of the popular vote [to Goldwater's 38.5%], the largest percentage since the popular vote first became widespread in 1824. In the end, Goldwater won only his native state of Arizona and five Deep South states that had been increasingly alienated by Democratic civil rights policies.
Johnson won 486 votes in the Electoral College. Goldwater just 52.
As LBJ might say, "That's an ass-whoopin'."
